When the stairs in your home become a barrier, most people think they have two options — move to a single-level home, or find a way to get between floors safely. If moving isn't something you want to do, the next question is usually: should I get a stairlift or a home elevator?

Both solve the same fundamental problem — getting you safely from one floor to another. But they are vastly different in terms of cost, installation complexity, disruption to your home, and the time it takes to get up and running. For many people, the decision is more straightforward than they expect once they understand what each option actually involves.

What Is a Home Elevator?

A home elevator is a small lift installed inside your house that moves between floors, similar to a commercial lift you'd use in a shopping centre or office building. It requires a dedicated shaft or enclosure built within the home, structural modifications to the floor and ceiling to create the opening between levels, and in most cases, significant building and electrical work.

There are several types of home elevator available in Australia including hydraulic lifts, traction lifts, pneumatic vacuum lifts, and through-floor platform lifts. Each has different space requirements, structural demands, and price points — but all of them involve a level of construction work that goes well beyond fitting a rail to your staircase.

What Is a Stairlift?

A stairlift is a motorised chair that travels along a rail fixed to your stair treads. It carries you up and down your existing staircase without any structural modifications to your home. The rail is fixed to the steps, not the wall, and the seat folds away when not in use so the staircase remains accessible to everyone else in the household.

Stairlifts are available in straight and curved models to suit virtually any staircase layout, including indoor and outdoor installations.

The Cost Difference

This is where the two options diverge significantly.

A home elevator in Australia typically costs between $30,000 and $80,000 depending on the type, the number of floors, and the extent of structural work required. Some premium models with custom finishes can exceed $100,000. On top of the elevator itself, you need to factor in the cost of building works — creating the shaft or enclosure, reinforcing floors, electrical upgrades, council approvals, and making good any disruption to the surrounding rooms. The total installed cost including building works can easily reach $50,000 to $120,000 or more.

Installation Time and Disruption

Home elevator. Installing a home elevator is a major building project. Depending on the type and the structural requirements of your home, installation can take anywhere from several weeks to several months. During this time, you'll have builders, electricians, and potentially engineers working in your home. There will be noise, dust, and disruption to your daily life. Rooms adjacent to the elevator shaft may need to be temporarily vacated. If structural modifications are significant, you may need council development approval before work can begin, adding further time to the process.

Stairlift. A straight stairlift is installed in two to four hours. A curved stairlift is installed in half a day to a full day. There is no structural work, no building approvals, no dust, and no disruption to any other part of your home. You'll be using your stairlift the same day it's installed. Space Requirements

Home elevator. A home elevator requires dedicated floor space on every level it services. The shaft or enclosure typically takes up at least 1.2 to 1.5 square metres of floor area — sometimes more depending on the model. This space is permanently lost from the room it's built into. In smaller homes, terraces, or older properties common across Sydney's Inner West and Eastern Suburbs, or in Queenslander-style homes in Brisbane, finding the space for an elevator shaft can be extremely difficult without major renovation.

Stairlift. A stairlift uses your existing staircase. It doesn't take any floor space from your rooms. When the seat is folded, it sits flush against the wall and the staircase remains usable. Structural Impact on Your Home

Home elevator. Installing an elevator involves cutting openings in floors and ceilings, building a shaft or enclosure, reinforcing structural elements, and running new electrical circuits. These are permanent changes to the structure of your home. While a well-installed elevator can add value to a property, a poorly planned one can compromise the layout and feel of the living spaces around it.

Stairlift. A stairlift is fixed to the stair treads with brackets. No walls are drilled, no floors are cut, and no structural changes are made. If you ever want to remove the stairlift — for example, if you sell the home — it comes off cleanly, leaving only small screw holes in the stair treads that can be filled in minutes. Your home goes back to how it was.

Ongoing Maintenance

Home elevator. Home elevators require regular professional maintenance, typically quarterly or six-monthly, and are subject to regulatory compliance inspections in most Australian states. Maintenance costs can run into thousands of dollars per year, and if a major component fails — the motor, hydraulic system, or control board — repair costs can be significant.

Stairlift. Stairlifts require an annual service for indoor models and six-monthly for outdoor installations. The service is straightforward and completed in under an hour. When Does a Home Elevator Make More Sense?

There are situations where a home elevator may be the better choice. If you or someone in your household uses a wheelchair full-time and cannot transfer to a stairlift seat, a through-floor lift or home elevator provides wheelchair-accessible floor-to-floor transport that a stairlift cannot. If your home has three or more levels, an elevator servicing all floors may be more practical than multiple stairlifts. If you're building a new home or undertaking a major renovation, incorporating an elevator into the design from the start is far less disruptive and expensive than retrofitting one later.

For most people in existing homes, though — particularly across Sydney, the Central Coast, the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and regional NSW and QLD — a stairlift is the more practical, affordable, and faster solution.

Funding

What to Expect During a Stairlift Installation

Deciding to get a stairlift is a big step — and it's natural to have questions about what actually happens on installation day. Will it be noisy? Will it damage the stairs or walls? How long will the staircase be out of action? Do I need to do anything to prepare?

The short answer is that stairlift installation is one of the least disruptive home modifications you can have done. There's no major building work, no structural changes to your home, and in most cases, you'll be using your new stairlift within a few hours. This guide walks you through every step so there are no surprises.

Before Installation Day

Before we arrive, there are a few things worth knowing about what's already happened behind the scenes and what you can do to prepare.

Your staircase has already been assessed. During your free home assessment, we measured your staircase, checked the layout, identified the best position for the rail, and confirmed which stairlift model suits your home. For a straight stairlift, this information is all we need to prepare your installation. For a curved stairlift, detailed measurements were taken so the rail could be custom manufactured to the exact shape of your staircase.

You'll have a confirmed installation date. We'll schedule a time that suits you. For straight stairlifts, this is often within days of your order. For curved stairlifts, there's a manufacturing period of approximately four weeks before the custom rail is ready, and we'll book your installation date as soon as the rail is confirmed for delivery.

Preparing your home. There's very little you need to do. Make sure the staircase is clear of any items — shoes, bags, ornaments, or anything stored on the steps. If there are pictures or decorations hanging on the staircase wall close to where the rail will run, it's worth moving them beforehand, though our installer will let you know if anything needs to be shifted. Ensure there's a power point accessible near the top or bottom of the staircase — this is where the stairlift's charging unit will plug in.

What Happens on Installation Day

Here's what the process looks like from start to finish.

Arrival and walkthrough. Our installer will arrive at the scheduled time and do a quick walkthrough with you to confirm the plan. They'll check the staircase, confirm the rail position, and answer any last-minute questions you have before starting work.

Protecting your home. The installer will lay down dust sheets to protect your flooring and staircase carpet. Stairlift installation is a clean job — there's no plaster dust, no heavy drilling into walls, and no painting required — but we protect your home as a matter of course.

Fitting the rail. The rail is fixed directly to the stair treads, not to the wall. This is an important point that surprises a lot of people. Because the rail attaches to the steps themselves, there's no need to drill into walls, plaster, or masonry. The fixings go into the stair treads using standard brackets, and the rail sits close to one side of the staircase.

For a straight stairlift, the rail arrives as a standard length and is cut to fit your staircase on site. For a curved stairlift, the rail arrives pre-manufactured to the exact shape of your staircase and is fitted in sections.

Mounting the carriage and seat. Once the rail is secured, the motorised carriage is fitted onto the rail, followed by the seat unit. The seat, armrests, and footrest are all attached, adjusted, and tested for smooth operation.

Electrical connection. The stairlift runs on rechargeable batteries, not mains power. A small charging unit is plugged into a standard power point near the top or bottom of the staircase. The stairlift charges its batteries automatically whenever it's parked at a charge point. This means the stairlift still works during a power outage — there's enough stored battery power for multiple trips even if the electricity goes out.

Testing. The installer runs the stairlift through its full range of travel multiple times, checking that everything operates smoothly, the safety sensors respond correctly, the swivel seat locks and unlocks properly, and the seatbelt functions as it should.

Clean up. The installer packs up all packaging and materials, removes the dust sheets, and leaves your home clean and tidy. There's no waste left behind for you to deal with.

How Long Does It Take?

A straight stairlift installation typically takes two to four hours from start to finish. A curved stairlift installation takes half a day to a full day depending on the complexity of the staircase — more turns and landings mean more rail sections to fit and align.

During installation, the staircase will be partially blocked while the rail is being fitted. If anyone else in the household needs to use the stairs during this time, the installer can usually accommodate short breaks in the work to let people pass. Your Handover and Training

Once the installation is complete and everything has been tested, the installer will sit down with you — and anyone else who'll be using the stairlift — for a full demonstration and training session. This covers how to operate the stairlift using the toggle control, how to use the seatbelt, how to operate the swivel seat at the top of the stairs for safe entry and exit, how to fold and unfold the seat, armrests, and footrest, how to use the remote controls to send the stairlift to the top or bottom when it's not in use, and what the diagnostic display means if it shows any messages.

The installer won't leave until you're completely comfortable using the stairlift on your own. There's no rush — they'll walk you through it as many times as you need.

Will It Damage My Stairs or Home?

This is one of the most common concerns, and the answer is no — not in any meaningful way. The rail is fixed to the stair treads with brackets, which means small screw holes in the treads. If the stairlift is ever removed in the future, these holes can be easily filled and are typically hidden by carpet or a simple touch-up.

No walls are drilled. No structural changes are made. No redecorating is needed. The only visible additions to your home are the rail, the seat unit, and a small charging unit plugged into a power point.

What About Narrow Staircases?

If you have a narrow staircase, you might be worried about whether the stairlift will block the stairs for other people. Our stairlifts feature a slim folding design — the seat, armrests, and footrest all fold flat against the wall when not in use, leaving the staircase clear for other household members to walk past. Even on narrow staircases, there's usually enough clearance for someone to pass comfortably when the stairlift is folded.

After Installation

Once your stairlift is in and you're using it daily, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Keep it charging. When you're not using the stairlift, park it at one of the charge points — usually at the top or bottom of the rail. This keeps the batteries topped up and ready to go.

Keep the stairs clear. Items left on the stairs can trigger the safety sensors and stop the stairlift mid-journey.

But many Australian homes have external stairs that are just as difficult — and often more dangerous — to navigate. Front entry steps, garden stairs, split-level pathways, and pool access areas can all become serious hazards for anyone with reduced mobility, balance issues, or joint pain.

Outdoor stairlifts are purpose-built for these situations. They're engineered to handle the elements while giving you safe, independent access to every part of your property. This guide explains the key differences between indoor and outdoor stairlifts, what makes an outdoor model suitable for the Australian climate, and how to decide which one you need.

Where Are Outdoor Stairlifts Used?

Outdoor stairlifts can be installed on virtually any external staircase or stepped pathway. The most common applications in NSW and QLD homes include front entry stairs from street level to the front door, rear garden steps leading to a backyard, patio, or entertaining area, split-level properties where different sections of the home or garden sit at different heights, pool access steps for getting to and from a pool or spa area, and sloped driveways or pathways with stepped sections.

Many homes across Sydney, the Central Coast, the Northern Beaches, and South East QLD are built on sloping blocks. These properties often have significant external stairs that become a real barrier for older residents. An outdoor stairlift means you don't have to give up access to parts of your own property — or consider selling your home — just because the front steps have become too difficult.

What Makes an Outdoor Stairlift Different?

An outdoor stairlift uses the same core technology as an indoor model — a rail, a motorised carriage, a seat, and battery power. The difference is in the materials and construction. Every component exposed to the weather is upgraded for durability.

Weather-resistant bodywork. The carriage, seat, footrest, and armrests are built with UV-stabilised plastics and corrosion-resistant metals. This protects against sun damage, which is a significant factor in the Australian climate.

Marine-grade electronics. The motor, control board, battery, and wiring are sealed against moisture. Rain, humidity, morning dew, and salt air in coastal areas can all corrode standard electrical components. Outdoor stairlifts use sealed housings and weatherproof connectors to prevent moisture ingress.

Drainage and ventilation. The carriage is designed so that water runs off rather than pooling on any surface. Ventilation channels allow airflow to prevent condensation buildup inside the housing, which is particularly important in the humid conditions common across coastal Sydney and QLD.

Protective cover. Every outdoor stairlift comes with a fitted weather cover that protects the seat, controls, and carriage when the stairlift is not in use. This adds an extra layer of protection against rain, dust, bird droppings, and fallen leaves. The cover takes seconds to fit and remove.

Non-slip surfaces. The footrest and seat surfaces are textured to prevent slipping when wet. This is a critical safety feature for an outdoor stairlift because the user may be stepping on and off the stairlift in damp conditions — after rain, in the early morning, or near a pool area.

How Does the Australian Climate Affect Outdoor Stairlifts?

Australia's climate is harsher on outdoor equipment than many other countries. The combination of intense UV, high humidity in coastal and subtropical areas, salt air near the coast, heavy rainfall, and temperature extremes means outdoor stairlifts need to be built tough.

UV and heat. In NSW and QLD, UV levels are among the highest in the world. Standard plastics and rubber components will degrade, crack, and discolour within a few years if they're not UV-rated. The outdoor-rated components used in our stairlifts are designed to handle prolonged Australian sun exposure without degrading.

Humidity and moisture. Coastal areas from Sydney's Eastern Suburbs through to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast experience high humidity for much of the year. Combined with morning dew and condensation, this creates a challenging environment for electronics and metal components. Marine-grade sealing and corrosion-resistant finishes are essential, not optional.

Salt air. If your home is within a few kilometres of the coast — and a huge number of homes in Sydney and South East QLD are — salt air accelerates corrosion on metal components. This is why marine-grade materials matter so much for outdoor stairlifts in Australian coastal areas.

Heavy rain and storms. NSW and QLD both experience periods of heavy rainfall, and subtropical QLD gets intense summer storms. An outdoor stairlift needs to handle being drenched and still operate safely afterwards. Sealed electronics and proper drainage design ensure the stairlift is ready to use as soon as the weather clears.

Temperature range. While Australia doesn't get the freezing winters that outdoor stairlifts face in the UK or Europe, temperature swings between cool winter mornings and hot summer afternoons can cause expansion and contraction in metal components. Quality outdoor stairlifts are engineered to accommodate this without affecting the rail alignment or drive mechanism.

Straight or Curved — Which Outdoor Options Are Available?

Both straight and curved stairlifts are available in outdoor-rated versions.

If your external stairs run in a straight line from top to bottom, a straight outdoor stairlift is the right choice. This is the most common configuration for front entry stairs and garden steps.

If your external stairs have bends, turns, or landings — which is common on split-level properties and garden pathways that follow the contour of a sloping block — a curved outdoor stairlift is required. The rail is custom manufactured to follow the exact path of your stairs, just as it would for an indoor curved installation.

Can I Use an Indoor Stairlift Outside?

No. An indoor stairlift is not designed to withstand moisture, UV exposure, or temperature fluctuations. Using an indoor model outdoors will void the warranty, accelerate wear on every component, and create a safety risk. If you need a stairlift for external stairs, it must be an outdoor-rated model.

Similarly, an outdoor stairlift can technically be used indoors, but there's no reason to.

What About Pool Access?

Pool hoists and platform lifts are separate products designed specifically for getting in and out of a swimming pool. If you need access to a pool area but the barrier is the steps leading down to the pool rather than getting into the water itself, an outdoor stairlift on the pool steps may be the right solution. We recommend servicing an outdoor stairlift every six months rather than the standard twelve months for indoor installations. Between services, keep the rail wiped down, use the fitted cover whenever the stairlift is not in use, and clear any leaves or debris from the staircase.

The good news is that modern stairlifts are designed to be low-maintenance, and with a combination of simple at-home care and periodic professional servicing, your stairlift should give you many years of trouble-free use.

What You Can Do Yourself

There are a few simple things you can do regularly to keep your stairlift in good condition between professional services. None of these require any technical knowledge or tools.

Keep the rail clean. The rail is the track your stairlift travels along. Over time, dust, pet hair, and household debris can accumulate on the rail surface. A quick wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth every couple of weeks keeps the rail clean and ensures the stairlift runs smoothly. Avoid using cleaning sprays, polishes, or chemical products on the rail as these can leave a residue that interferes with the drive mechanism.

Keep the staircase clear. This sounds obvious, but it's one of the most common causes of stairlift issues. Items left on the stairs — shoes, bags, toys, laundry — can trigger the safety sensors and stop the stairlift mid-journey. Make sure the staircase is clear before using the stairlift and remind other household members to keep the stairs tidy.

Wipe down the seat and controls. The vinyl seat covers on Bespoke stairlifts are designed to be easy to clean. A wipe with a damp cloth is all that's needed to keep the seat hygienic. Drive mechanism. The rack and pinion drive system that moves the stairlift along the rail is inspected and lubricated. The engineer checks for any wear on the gear teeth and ensures the drive is operating smoothly.

Battery check. Bespoke stairlifts run on rechargeable batteries that charge automatically when the stairlift is parked at a charge point. The engineer tests the battery voltage and charge cycle to make sure the batteries are holding charge properly. How Often Should a Stairlift Be Serviced?

We recommend a professional service at least once every twelve months. An annual service keeps your stairlift in safe working order and catches any wear or issues before they become problems.

If your stairlift gets heavy daily use — for example, multiple trips up and down per day across several household members — a service every six months may be more appropriate. We can advise on the right schedule based on your usage.

If your stairlift is used outdoors, more frequent servicing is recommended. Outdoor stairlifts are exposed to rain, humidity, dust, and temperature changes that can accelerate wear on certain components. A six-monthly service is a sensible minimum for outdoor installations in NSW.

What About the Warranty?

Stairlift stops mid-journey. This is almost always caused by something on the stairs triggering a safety sensor. Check for objects on the staircase and clear them. If the staircase is clear and the stairlift still won't move, check that the power switch on the stairlift is turned on and that the key lock hasn't been accidentally engaged.

Stairlift won't start. Check that the stairlift is parked at a charge point and the charge indicator shows it's receiving power. If the batteries are flat — usually because the stairlift has been left away from a charge point for an extended period — it may need time to recharge before it will operate. If it still won't start after charging, call us.

Rough or noisy ride. This can indicate that the rail needs cleaning or that the drive mechanism needs lubrication. Try wiping down the rail first. If the issue persists, book a service.

Stairlift Solutions for Narrow Staircases in Sydney Homes

One of the most common concerns we hear from homeowners across Sydney is "my staircase is too narrow for a stairlift." It's understandable — many of Sydney's most popular suburbs are full of older homes with staircases that were never designed with mobility equipment in mind. Terraces in the Inner West and Surry Hills, federation homes on the North Shore, semis in the Eastern Suburbs, and older weatherboard houses across Western Sydney often have staircases that feel tight.

The good news is that in the vast majority of cases, a stairlift can be installed. Modern stairlifts are designed to be far slimmer and more compact than most people expect, and our team has fitted stairlifts in some of the narrowest staircases across NSW.

How Narrow Is Too Narrow?

A stairlift rail is fitted to the staircase treads, not the wall. This means it takes up less room than most people assume. The minimum staircase width required for a stairlift depends on the model, but as a general guide most straight stairlifts can be installed on staircases as narrow as 740mm (approximately 29 inches) from wall to wall.

Our Synergy Straight Stairlift is specifically designed with a slim rail and compact carriage to suit narrower staircases. When the stairlift is not in use, the seat, armrests, and footrest all fold up neatly against the wall, leaving room for other household members to walk up and down the stairs normally.

For curved staircases, the minimum width requirement is similar, though the rail configuration needs more careful planning around bends and landings. Our Infinity Curved Stairlift uses a dual rail system that is custom-manufactured to fit your exact staircase, ensuring the tightest possible fit on every curve.

What If My Staircase Is Narrower Than 740mm?

If your staircase is particularly narrow, there may still be options. In some cases, minor modifications to the staircase or surrounding area can create enough clearance. For example, removing or trimming a handrail on the opposite side to the stairlift rail, adjusting a newel post at the top or bottom of the stairs, or reconfiguring the landing area slightly to improve access on and off the stairlift.

We always assess these options during our free home visit. In our experience, very few staircases in Sydney are genuinely too narrow for a stairlift — the issue is usually more about perception than reality. People see their staircase every day and assume there's no room, but once they see how compact the stairlift actually is, they're surprised by how much space remains.

What About Other People Using the Stairs?

A common worry is that once the stairlift is installed, nobody else will be able to use the stairs. This isn't the case. When the stairlift is parked at the top or bottom and the seat, arms, and footrest are folded up, the stairlift only takes up a small amount of space along one side of the staircase (around 30cm). Other household members can walk up and down the stairs comfortably.

The stairlift also comes with remote controls, so it can be called to the top or bottom of the stairs without anyone having to walk past it. And our powered hinged rail option automatically lifts the bottom section of the rail out of the way when the stairlift is parked at the top, removing any potential trip hazard at the base of the stairs.

Common Sydney Home Types We've Fitted

We've installed stairlifts in a wide range of Sydney homes. Some of the more challenging — and rewarding — installations include Victorian and federation terraces in Paddington, Balmain, Newtown, Glebe and Surry Hills where staircases are often steep and narrow with a turn at the top, post-war semis in Randwick, Coogee, Maroubra and the Inner West with narrow straight staircases, multi-level homes on the North Shore and Northern Beaches where outdoor steps leading to the front door also need a solution, split-level homes in the Hills District, Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills with half-flights and landings, and older fibro and weatherboard homes across Western Sydney and the Central Coast.

How to Find Out If a Stairlift Will Fit

EnableNSW and icare Home Modifications — What's Covered for Stairlifts and Mobility Equipment

Most people in NSW have heard of the NDIS when it comes to funding mobility equipment and home modifications. But there's another major funding pathway that many people don't know about — EnableNSW, which operates through icare.

If you or someone you care for has been seriously injured in a workplace accident or road accident in NSW, EnableNSW may be able to fund a stairlift, mobility equipment, or other home modifications to help you live safely and independently at home. This guide explains how it works.

What Is EnableNSW?

EnableNSW is a program run by icare (Insurance and Care NSW) that provides assistive technology, home modifications, and vehicle modifications to people in NSW who have been seriously injured. It operates under two main schemes.

The Workers Compensation scheme covers people who have been injured at work in NSW. If your workplace injury has resulted in a permanent mobility impairment that makes it difficult or unsafe to use stairs, you may be eligible for a funded stairlift or other home modification.

The Motor Accident Injuries scheme covers people who have been injured in a road accident in NSW. This includes drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists. If your road accident injuries have left you with mobility limitations, EnableNSW can fund equipment and modifications to support your recovery and long-term independence.

The Lifetime Care and Support Scheme is for people with the most serious injuries from road accidents — typically traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputations, or severe burns. Participants in this scheme receive lifelong support including home modifications, equipment, and ongoing care.

What Can Be Funded?

EnableNSW can fund a wide range of home modifications and mobility equipment. For stairlifts and access solutions, this includes straight and curved stairlifts for indoor and outdoor use, platform stairlifts for wheelchair users, wheelchair ramps, handrails and grab rails, bathroom modifications for accessibility, and other structural changes to improve access within the home.

For mobility equipment, funding can cover manual and powered wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walking frames and aids, and other assistive technology related to your injury.

How Is This Different From the NDIS?

The key difference is eligibility. The NDIS is for people under 65 with a permanent and significant disability regardless of how the disability occurred. EnableNSW through icare is specifically for people injured in workplace or road accidents in NSW, regardless of age.

If your mobility impairment was caused by a workplace or road accident, EnableNSW may be the more appropriate funding pathway. In some cases, people may be eligible for both — your situation will determine which scheme applies.

Another important difference is that EnableNSW is a NSW-specific program. It only covers people injured in NSW under NSW workers compensation or motor accident schemes. If your injury occurred in another state, different schemes apply.

How to Apply for a Stairlift Through EnableNSW

The process is similar to the NDIS pathway but runs through icare rather than the NDIA.

Step 1: Speak to your case manager. If you're receiving workers compensation or motor accident injury support, you'll have a case manager through your insurer. They are your first point of contact for requesting home modifications. Let them know you need a stairlift or home modification assessment.

Step 2: Occupational therapy assessment. An occupational therapist will assess your home and your functional needs. They will document why a stairlift or modification is required and prepare a recommendation report. This is similar to the NDIS process.

Step 3: Get a quote. Bespoke Mobility can provide a detailed quote for the stairlift supply and installation. We will assess your staircase, recommend the right stairlift model, and prepare the documentation required by icare.

Step 4: Approval and installation. Your case manager and insurer will review the OT report and our quote. Once approved, we schedule the installation. Timeframes vary depending on the insurer and the complexity of the modification, but we work to get installations completed as quickly as possible.

What If I'm Not Sure Which Scheme I Fall Under?

It can be confusing to work out whether your situation falls under workers compensation, motor accident injuries, the Lifetime Care and Support Scheme, or the NDIS. If you're not sure, here's a simple starting point.

If your injury happened at work in NSW, contact your employer's workers compensation insurer or call icare on 13 44 22.

If your injury happened in a road accident in NSW, contact your CTP (compulsory third party) insurer or call icare on 13 44 22.

Can I Use EnableNSW Funding for Equipment Hire?

In some cases, yes. If you need a temporary stairlift while recovering from surgery or during rehabilitation, your case manager may be able to approve short-term hire rather than a permanent installation. Bespoke Mobility offers stairlift hire services (only on straight stairlifts) across NSW which can be a practical option during the recovery period.

A Guide for OTs: Recommending Stairlifts Under the NDIS

If you're an occupational therapist working with NDIS participants in NSW, you'll know that home modification recommendations can be one of the more time-consuming parts of the process. Stairlifts in particular sit in a space where the clinical assessment, the product specifications, and the NDIS funding requirements all need to align.

We put this guide together to make that process easier. At Bespoke Mobility, we work alongside OTs across NSW every week and we've seen what makes a stairlift recommendation go through smoothly — and what causes delays. Here's what we've found works best.

When Is a Stairlift the Right Recommendation?

A stairlift is typically appropriate when the participant has a permanent disability that affects their ability to safely negotiate stairs, the participant lives in a multi-level home and needs to access upper or lower floors for essential daily activities such as sleeping, bathing or toileting, relocating essential living areas to a single floor is not practical or would not adequately meet the participant's needs, and the participant has the physical and cognitive capacity to safely operate a stairlift, or has a carer who can assist with operation.

The key consideration the NDIA looks for is that the stairlift is reasonable and necessary — meaning it is directly related to the participant's disability, it represents value for money, and there is no simpler or lower-cost alternative that would meet the need.

What to Cover in Your Assessment

When assessing a participant for a stairlift, we'd suggest covering the following areas as they tend to be what the NDIA and plan managers look for in the recommendation report.

Functional capacity on stairs: Document the participant's current ability to use stairs. Note any pain, fatigue, falls history, fear of falling, use of handrails, need for assistance, and how the limitation impacts daily routines. Be specific — "the participant is unable to safely ascend 14 stairs to access the only bathroom in the home" is stronger than "the participant has difficulty with stairs."

Home layout and alternatives: Document why relocating essential activities to one floor is not viable. For example, if the only bathroom or bedroom is upstairs, or if the downstairs layout cannot reasonably be modified to include these facilities. Include the staircase configuration — straight or curved, number of steps, any landings or turns, and the width of the staircase.

Stairlift suitability: Note that the participant can safely transfer on and off the stairlift seat (or platform, for wheelchair users), that they can operate the controls or have a carer who can assist, and that the staircase is suitable for a stairlift installation. If you're unsure whether the staircase is suitable, we're happy to do a joint site visit or review photos and measurements.

Goals alignment: Link the recommendation to the participant's NDIS goals. Stairlifts typically support goals around independence at home, safety, accessing all areas of the home, and reducing reliance on informal supports or carer assistance.

Stairlift Types — A Quick Reference

It helps to know the basics of what's available so you can recommend the right type in your report.

Straight stairlifts are suitable for a single flight of stairs with no bends or turns. They are the most affordable option, with installation typically completed in a few hours. Our Synergy Straight Stairlift has a maximum user weight of 125kg and features a slim rail design that leaves room for others to use the stairs.

Curved stairlifts are required for any staircase with bends, turns, corners or intermediate landings. The rail is custom-manufactured to match the exact staircase, so there is a manufacturing lead time. Our Infinity Curved Stairlift is built to measure for each installation.

Outdoor stairlifts are available in both straight and curved models with weatherproofing for external steps and entrances.

All our stairlifts include seatbelts, obstruction sensors, emergency stop functions, and battery backup in case of power outage.

Tips for a Smooth Approval Process

We understand that your time is limited and your caseload is full. Our goal is to make the stairlift process as easy as possible for you and your client.

When you refer a client to us or contact us about a stairlift assessment, we will visit the home to assess the staircase and confirm which stairlift model is suitable, provide a detailed quote that meets NDIS requirements and can be submitted directly to the plan manager, liaise with the plan manager on approval if needed, schedule installation at a time that works for the client, and provide a full handover and demonstration.

Curved vs Straight Stairlift — Which One Do I Need?

One of the first questions people ask when considering a stairlift is whether they need a curved or straight model. The answer depends entirely on the shape of your staircase, but the differences between the two go beyond just the rail shape. Understanding how each type works, what they cost, and how long they take to install will help you make the right decision for your home.

What Is a Straight Stairlift?

A straight stairlift is designed for staircases that go from one floor to the next in a single straight line with no bends, turns, or landings in between. The rail is manufactured as a standard length and cut to fit your staircase during installation.

Straight stairlifts are the most common type installed in Australian homes. They are simpler to manufacture, quicker to install, and more affordable than curved models. In most cases, a straight stairlift can be installed within a few hours on the same day the rail is delivered.

The Bespoke Synergy is our straight stairlift model. It features a slim folding design that keeps your staircase clear when the lift is not in use, includes optional powered upgrades, such as, a swivel seat for safe entry and exit at the top of the stairs or a powered hinge rail to avoid any tripping hazards at the bottom of the rail, and a weight capacity of up to 125kg.

What Is a Curved Stairlift?

A curved stairlift is designed for staircases that have one or more bends, turns, intermediate landings, or spiral sections. Because every curved staircase is different, the rail must be custom manufactured to follow the exact shape of your stairs.

This custom manufacturing is what makes curved stairlifts more expensive and longer to install than straight models. The rail is precision engineered to match your staircase perfectly, which means a detailed survey of your stairs is required before the rail can be built.

The Infinity is our curved stairlift model. It rides on a double slim rail that hugs the wall, keeping your staircase as open as possible. It handles turns of any angle, can navigate intermediate landings, and has the optional upgrades the straight model has.

How Do I Know Which One I Need?

The simplest way to tell is to look at your staircase. If your stairs go straight from bottom to top with no turns or landings, you need a straight stairlift. If your stairs have any bend, turn, curve, or landing between the bottom and top, you need a curved stairlift.

Some homes have a staircase that is mostly straight but has a small bend at the top or bottom. Even a slight turn means a standard straight rail won't fit, so a curved stairlift is required.

If your home has an L-shaped staircase with a 90-degree turn and a small landing, that's a curved stairlift. If you have a U-shaped staircase that turns 180 degrees with a half landing, that's also a curved stairlift. Spiral staircases always require a curved stairlift.

What's the Difference in Cost?

Straight stairlifts are more affordable because the rail is a standard component that can be cut to length on site. You can expect a straight stairlift to cost significantly less than a curved model.

Curved stairlifts cost more because the rail is custom manufactured to the exact dimensions of your staircase. The more complex the staircase — more turns, longer runs, tighter angles — the higher the cost of the rail.

Both straight and curved stairlifts may be eligible for funding through the NDIS, EnableNSW, My Aged Care, or DVA depending on your circumstances. We can help you understand which funding pathway applies to your situation.

What About Installation Time?

Straight stairlifts are typically installed in two to four hours. Because the rail is a standard component, we can often install within a few days of confirmation for your order.

Curved stairlifts take longer because the custom rail needs to be manufactured first. Once the rail is built and delivered, the installation itself usually takes half a day to a full day depending on the complexity of the staircase.

Can a Stairlift Be Installed on Either Side of the Stairs?

Yes. Both straight and curved stairlifts can be installed on either side of your staircase. The best side depends on the width of your stairs, the position of doors or landings at the top and bottom, and which side gives the safest entry and exit points. We assess all of this during the home survey and recommend the best position.

What If I Have Two Sets of Stairs?

Some two-storey homes have separate straight sections of stairs connected by a landing rather than a single continuous curved staircase. In these cases, two straight stairlifts — one on each section — can sometimes be more cost-effective than a single curved stairlift that spans the entire staircase. We'll assess your home and recommend whichever option is most practical and affordable.

Will a Stairlift Fit My Narrow Staircase?

This is a common concern, especially in older Sydney homes where staircases can be quite narrow. Both our Synergy and Infinity models feature slim folding designs that minimise how much space they take up on the staircase. When folded, the seat, armrests, and footrest sit flush against the wall, leaving the staircase clear for other people to walk past.

Indoor vs Outdoor — Does It Matter?

Both straight and curved stairlifts are available in outdoor-rated versions for external staircases, garden steps, or pool access areas. Outdoor models are built with weather-resistant components to handle the NSW climate including rain, humidity, and sun exposure.
